Dublin City University

In Dublin’s fair city…

The participant in our nation’s capital is DCU.  Situated in the North of the city, the University has been ecologically conscious from its foundation, and students there aim to save more energy than the other participants combined.  Big talk!

Energy Saving

DCU is a modern campus and should do well in energy saving.  Students and the University are keen to save energy and save the planet.  They’ll benefit from a host of advice and information from Student SwitchOff on keeping those bills and CO2 emissions down.

What is Student Switch Off?

Student Switch Off is a sustainability campaign running at DCU which supports and encourages students living in halls of residence to save energy and water, as well as recycle.

All students living on campus are part of the energy saving plan, but we’re gathering data from College Park.  If you live in one of the residences you are automatically taking part in the competition but visit our get involved page to find out how you can do more and win individual prizes like Ben & Jerry’s, return rail tickets and other great prizes.

At the end of the year, the hall that saves the most energy & recycles the best will win a prize!

Why does Student Switch Off exist?

Student Switch Off provides a platform for students to take personal action on the Climate Crisis.

  • Halls of residence are energy & water intensive buildings
  • Inefficient electricity, heat and water use all contribute to the Climate Crisis, with the majority of Europe’s energy coming from fossil fuels
  • When bills are included in rent, we may not be as enticed to save
  • Reducing energy & water waste is a great way to reduce negative environmental and social impact
  • Reducing waste and recycling where possible also saves energy, resources and cuts CO2 emissions
  • Whilst these actions aren’t going to solve the whole problem, it’s a great place for individuals to start as it’s simple and seemingly small actions really can add up

What impact does the campaign have?

The campaign runs in universities across Europe and in the past 12 years we have…

  • Kept 20,000 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere
  • Saved millions in wasted energy costs
  • Trained students to save energy and CO2 now and in their future.

Each and every small action contributes to our collective impact, so thanks to students at DCU for being part of Student Switch Off!
